Young Motorcyclist Dies in Crash
A 23-year-old man was killed in an accident recently while riding his motorcycle on Newark Avenue in Jersey City. The man from North Bergen, whose name was not publicly released, was heading eastbound at what a witness reported was a high rate of speed. The man lost control of his motorcycle and ran into the rear of a tractor-trailer parked along Newark Avenue, and ended up in the westbound lane of traffic after falling off of his motorcycle. Emergency personnel arrived to find the man with chest, elbow, and pelvis injuries. He was taken to Jersey City Medical Center – Barnabas Health and underwent surgery, but later succumbed to his injuries. Two witnesses to the accident indicated where the young man lost control of his bike as being a patch of very uneven pavement, where it appeared that the road had recently been under construction.
Motorcycle riders are subject to many dangers on the road that either do not exist or are far smaller to drivers of passenger vehicles. Speed on behalf of the motorcycle driver is frequently an element in motorcycle crashes. However, motorcycles tend to be much more vulnerable to the effects of debris, loose gravel, uneven pavement, or even shattered safety glass than a passenger vehicle would be, due to the fact that loose material on the road provides lower friction, and can cause drivers to lose control of their vehicle. If a municipal government or private construction company was responsible for leaving a roadway in an excessively unsafe state, and an accident occurs, the public entity or company may be liable to the motorcyclist or their heirs for the driver’s injuries or death. Additionally, while a passenger vehicle driver can often expect to survive rear-ending another vehicle, motorcyclists will experience much more severe physical effects from a rear-end accident.
